Renovation experts, Bonnie, Lana and Erin of Three Birds Renovations, recently revealed their 12th home renovation. This time, they transformed a small, old cottage into a warm, inviting and spacious modern home that suits the needs of the family of four.

Completely changing the configuration of the home, the kitchen of the ‘Contemporary Cottage’ uses plenty of timber tones to give the room warmth, while luxurious touches, like the banquet seating, gives the home a modern update.

Their priority was creating a functional kitchen that allows the family to cook and spend time together, with plenty of storage, while keeping the aesthetics beautiful. To achieve this, they started by mapping out the look and feel of the space.

Three Birds Co-Founder and Creative Director, Bonnie Hindmarsh, says, “It’s all about your vision board, baby! We’re always on the lookout for inspiration and we get it from a range of places – glossy mags, travel (not so much these days!), Pinterest, Instagram. Creating a concise vision of how you want your home to look AND feel is super-duper important when it comes to renovating and nailing your vision board should always be the first step of any reno.

“Once you’ve nailed your overall style you can create a kitchen specific board with images of kitchens you love. This should help you narrow down your style and make choosing products easily. We know it’s tempting to jump right in and start making decisions straight away but our best advice is to back up the truck and doesn’t start moving again until your vision board is done and dusted. You’ll thank us later!”

Here, Bonnie, Lana and Erin from Three Birds Renovations share how you can incorporate unexpected design ideas into your kitchen renovation.
Get creative with your benchtop

Get creative with your benchtop

We love engineered stone benchtops… but they don’t always have to be rectangular. The House 12 benchtop is all the inspiration you need for some curvalicious goodness! We worked with the team at Carrera by Design to create this kitchen and adding some wow factor to the island was a must. The curved panel along one length of the island with groove strips detail to add more layers and interest and the Talostone Elba White benchtop is cut to mirror the curves of the cabinetry.
Stylish appliances that have substance as well

At House 12, we chose an Electrolux 60cm oven in Dark Stainless Steel with pyrolytic cleaning our favourite integrated dishwasher that pops open at the end of cycle to naturally air dry your dishes and the intuitive rangehood that automatically turns on when you start cooking – brilliant!

Bring in a banquette

Bring in a banquette

Banquette, or bench seating, brings a hotel or restaurant vibe to your home. It’s a great place for friends and family to sit and chat to the chef. Lana’s a self-proclaimed bench seat aficionado so is very pleased that this one is built to her ideal specs – 450mm high and 510mm deep. That’s before we added the custom bench seat cushion, with the arched back rests, to bring in elements of the arch shape we’ve used throughout the house. The icing on the cake is the two table tops, just the perfect size for a cup of coffee or glass of wine. They’re made from the same Talostone Elba White as we used for the bench tops.
Who says we always do white kitchens?! Coastal Oak timber cabinetry gives the kitchen a warm and welcoming feel and we love how seamlessly the light wood tones of the kitchen work with the rest of the house.
